selection process for volunteers

Distress Centre Wellington/Dufferin respects individual privacy by protecting personal information and adhering to all relevant legislative requirements.  This also applies to data  collected in  our on-line application forms.

Before completing the on-line forms, please read the following step-by-step description of our selection process.  While an applicant may be screened out at any point in the process, there is no obligation to make a commitment to the Centre until acceptance into our training program.

The First Step of our screening process is your decision to complete the online Volunteer Application Form and send it to us.  Along with the Application Form, we ask you to complete our online Self Awareness Questionnaire.   This further assists us in assessing your suitability as a volunteer.  It may also give some new insights about yourself. This is a lengthy form.  Please, take your time and complete it as honestly and thoroughly as possible.  There is no right or wrong answer and all of your responses will be kept strictly confidential.

The Second Step is the online Reference Request Form.  When submitting your application, please notify the two people you have listed as references.  They can complete the online Reference Request Form or be contacted by regular mail, e-mail, fax or telephone once an interview has been completed.  Please encourage them to send their completed forms to the Centre quickly.

The Third Step after your application is complete we will set up a pre-training one-on-one interview.  Here you will find out more about the Centre.  Part of the interview will be an informative question and answer period.

Finally after we've met you at the interview you will be invited to attend one of our in-class training programs.

The Sessions are held on different days depending on the specific course schedule.   There are also four to six mentoring shifts of four hours each that take place once the in-class training program is complete.  The training sessions will be held at prearranged locations depending on availability of each facility.

Our extensive training program means that we must ask for a firm one year commitment as a volunteer with the Centre after the completion of the volunteer training.  Also, the Distress Centre's policy states that we cannot provide references (for graduate studies, social service jobs, etc...) until the volunteer has completed his/her one-year (16 hours per month) shift commitment.  After that time, we will be happy to provide letters of recommendation wherever needed.

Please note the following important points:

As a condition of acceptance into our training program, you will be required to provide a copy of a Police Records Check.  This will be kept on file by Distress Centre Wellington/Dufferin.  There is no cost for this.

Upon acceptance to our program, all information you receive is confidential and is not to be discussed with anyone including your spouse, partner, close friends or relatives.

Any release of confidential information and/or direct contact made with any client of the Distress Centre Wellington/Dufferin will result in your release as a volunteer.

We look forward to meeting you!
